The Organization

For over five decades Sterling Engineering, Inc. has been a trusted partner for engineering, project management, and staffing solutions. It has been providing exceptional engineering/technical recruitment and engineering project services to clients nationwide.

Tim Silkaitis, Vice President of Finance, MBA at Sterling Engineering, Inc. recently celebrated his 30th anniversary and has witnessed Sterling Engineering’s growth first-hand. “I always tell everybody I started in middle school”, Silkaitis joked. What started as a part-time internship as an undergraduate at Elmhurst College, turned into a full-time job. He worked his way up, earning a master’s degree at night from DePaul Kellstadt Graduate School. “We’re growing, especially, over the last three years”, says Silkaitis.

Silkaitis goes on to explain, “We’re in about 33 states, the most congested parts of the country are Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. And then our Baltimore office, we have a lot of folks out there. Then we have a small concentration in Texas, a small concentration in California and then our customers take us to different states. And hopefully, that’ll grow, and continue moving forward,” Silkaitis.

The Beginning

A decade ago, Tim Silkaitis met Professional Advantage at TechServe Alliance, the premier association for the I.T. & Engineering staffing and solutions industry.

“I saw 1Staff handles staffing and handles engineering. There aren’t a lot of solutions out there that can handle both. We have two separate companies here, 2 EIN numbers. But our management team sales force, recruiting act more like one company rather than two. That’s kind of another reason why we went with the 1Staff solution because we have a lot of crossover. One company does all the engineering work, but it does staffing as well; then with the commission programs, it’s all in one central location. All the reports are on all the data which we can also break out. Which is nice, it’s broken down by company, it’s broken down by division, things of that nature. But you know 1Staff has been very, very flexible, and then there’s access to all the data,” explains Silkaitis.

Microsoft Power BI

Sterling Engineering has been using other Microsoft products for years and is fond of Microsoft Teams, but just recently started dabbling in the Microsoft Power Platform, specifically Microsoft Power BI.

“We’re just so thankful that Power BI connects to 1Staff and Dynamics GP just seamlessly, it’s all in one spot and it’s just proving its weight in gold, it’s just such an open architecture that we can basically do anything we want with the data. It’s been very, very helpful from that standpoint, and being more dynamic with our information.”

Sterling Engineering has been using 1Staff Analytics PivotTables for years to expose vital insights, pinpoint opportunities, and challenges, compare performance and identify trends. Now they’re supercharging 1Staff Analytics with Power BI. “PivotTables we normally use that data for us internally, for analyzing and then Power BI is kind of the nice package where everybody looks at. But the PivotTables in the back helps us do you know our day-to-day stuff, week to week, month to month for the true accounting features as well. It’s nice having both of those and then just having all that data, all the tables just open,” Silkaitis.

When discussing Power BI Silkaitis says, “You know, I would suggest that or another software that’s similar to that for anybody. The help that professional advantage is done with that has been very, very helpful, helpful with the architecture, drawing the maps out. That’s just been the largest win.”

Looking toward the future

“We actually hired a bunch of people in November, and we went into these separate nine divisions, and we’re staffing up all of those divisions. For the last nine months, we’ve been working hard to get that in place, and we have a few more hires that we’re doing here,“ says Silkaitis.

As Sterling Engineering continues to grow their nine divisions in; Aerospace, Automation and Robotics, Food & Beverage, Heavy Equipment, Life Science, and Manufacturing they have continued to maintain 4 ½ people on the Back Office team.

“We are having all-time record growth this year for the combined companies and we’re ahead of pace on our numbers for this year going into next year. So that’s basically it, finalization of internal hires. And then after that, once we get to a certain point, then we are going to be looking into possible purchases of other smaller companies. We’ve already done an analysis,”
